A Liverpool bus-turned-mobile art gallery, designed by Beatles artist Sir Peter Blake, will visit the North West next month.
Sir Peter’s agents, CCA, bought the 25-year-old vehicle in 2008, fitting it out with gallery space and lounge at a cost of £250,000 to transform it into the “Art Bus”.
The London-based artist, who famously created the sleeve design for Beatles album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, designed the bus in his flamboyant pop art style. The aim was to create a travelling show with the ethos of a rock ’n’ roll show – in a space which is itself a piece of art.
The Art Bus will travel to Chester Racecourse on September 6, where guests at the International Polo Weekend will be invited aboard for a private tour.
The following day, it will embark on a tour of the city’s main sights before reaching its final destination, the Watergate Street Gallery.
On board will be a selection of limited edition prints and original paintings by some of Britain’s leading contemporary artists, giving a taste of a new exhibition at the gallery featuring British modern and contemporary art.
It will include works by Sir Peter, Barbara Rae, Bruce McLean and the late Storm Thorgerson, alongside new sensations Dan Baldwin and Joe Webb.
Alex Sharp, owner of The Watergate Street Gallery, said: “The gallery has paid homage to Blake’s incredible collector’s pieces over the years and we are delighted the Art Bus is joining us in Chester.
“The Watergate Street Gallery prides itself on nurturing long-standing working relationships with artists.
“We also believe in making contemporary British art accessible to the wider community both through our website and projects like the Art Bus.”
The bus has been designed so that the top deck is a gallery space and the lower a seating and entertainment area.
It was launched in 2009 with a tour of iconic London pop art locations and now tours the UK.
The gallery is hosting a private view from 12pm on September 7 – a free ticket must be booked in advance to board the bus. E-mail alex@watergatestreet gallery.co.uk
