I truly believe in the luxury of an impromptu night away – not too far from home for a little Cheshire ‘staycation’… to take off for a romantic night away from the chaos of family and home, just once in a while.
And Cheshire is blessed with some real gems all over the county; from lovely country pubs with über-comfortable guest rooms, to stately homes & resorts complete with fine dine restaurants, sumptuous spas and magnificent golf courses, and everything in between.
I was delighted to be asked by owner Sam Norris to pay a visit to her lovely Cheshire pub, The White Lion in Weston a couple of weekends ago – to show off her brand new bedrooms.
Sam and her partner took The White Lion over just a few years ago and have turned this perfectly positioned village pub (which dates back to the 17th century) into a country treasure. The bar, restaurant and lounge is cool, funky and chic all at the same time with doggie wall coverings, massive mirrors and the most impressive chandeliers this side of Manchester!
Sam has spent a great deal of time and effort on the garden too, and the giant chessboard is a hit with regulars and visitors alike – its great fun for everyone, including the kids.
I arrived early evening to a very warm welcome from Sam and the team, and was eager to see to the new bedrooms, including a very sexy new suite!! They’re really lovely and very worthy of their modest price tags…
After settling in I headed downstairs for a glass of wine (well, it was a Friday after all) and dinner for one in the 1652 Restaurant which was buzzing with relaxed, chatty diners tucking into delicious looking pub dishes. I opted for butternut squash and blue cheese crumble to start, followed by roasted lamb rump (served pink) with sweet potato mash, broccoli and red wine jus. Both were delicious, proper portions cooked really well using quality ingredients. To finish I couldn’t resist the chocolate and brandy brioche & butter pudding with crème anglaise, which of course was gorgeous (couldn’t quite finish it though… sorry chef!)
After one more cheeky glass of the house sauvignon (great quality of course), it was time to head back upstairs for a long hot shower and to sink into that lovely big bed with big white fluffy pillows …. Heaven.
And after a totally fabulous breakfast of eggs benedict, proper tea and plenty of orange juice it was time to make my way back home to Chester, it only took 40 minutes!!
This was a really lovely stay in a really nice Cheshire pub serving proper pub food (delicious too!) with fab wines, gorgeous new bedrooms and above all, delightful staff. Give the team a call and ask for the special ‘We Love Cheshire’ dinner, bed & breakfast package – perfect for a cheeky night away with someone special, or even on your own for a mid-week chill out! Why not?!?
