Chester’s Favourite Bar & Restaurant Launches Totally New Menu Which Promises Small Plates and Big Flavours!

Innovative, quality driven and always exciting; Barlounge has been serving up the finest mix of classic British dining and superb cocktails since it first opened its doors over eighteen years ago.

A firm favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, Barlounge has always been synonymous with excellence and the new menu promises to be one of the most exciting culinary experiences in the City.

No small change here, the current menu has been completely re-imagined and comes on the back of over 12 months of research and development by their talented team of chefs.

Driven by Head Chef Ben Rutherford, the new offering champions an amazing array of exciting ingredients and powerful flavours from across the globe and diners can expect a totally new approach across the board.

‘We know that the way people dine is changing, ‘commented Ben. ‘Guests are a lot more adventurous and really enjoy experimenting with new flavours and sharing dishes together. With that in mind we are absolutely thrilled to be launching an innovative British Sharing Plate Menu here in the city.’

‘We’ve taken our influences from our travels across the UK, Europe and America and the new style menu allows us to offer truly modern interpretations on flavours from around the globe. We hope our discerning guests will enjoy exploring these cultural references, in palatable portions and discover unexpected flavours and new favourite combinations along the way – all served as soon as it’s ready, when it’s fresh and at its best.’

So What’s On The Menu?

Bold flavours, twists on classic dishes and quality ingredients from around the world; the new Sharing Plates Menu is like a holiday for your taste-buds.

Highlights include; the finest creamy Burrata, where delicate flavours are met with the intense flavour of ‘Nduja’. This Calbrian sausage gives a hint of heat in every mouthful and is the perfect partner for the cool, comforting Burrata mozzarella.

The fresh Panzanella salad is like summer on a plate; packed with the ripest and tastiest heirloom tomatoes and tossed with chunks of home-baked sour dough that absorb their flavours and juices to perfection. This Tuscan classic is all about simple flavours and quality ingredients.

You will also find a twist on a traditional hummus with a delicious sweet roast carrot alternative that is addictive in both colour and flavour whilst the spiced chickpea and salsa verde adds a tasty extra dimension to this super-simple dish.

In fact, its fair to say that vegetarians and vegans are superbly well catered for from the new menu with a host of exciting fresh additions making the grade. The smoky grilled aubergine with sweet white miso and pickled pear is a bit special; a taste explosion that fully demonstrates the team’s passion for exceptional flavours.

Famed for their steaks, we are delighted to say that carnivores will not be disappointed either and the delicious chargrilled 190-day grain fed Flat-iron Steak served with vibrant Chimichurri Rojo has to be the star of the show! This traditional sauce from Argentina and Uruguay compliments the meat perfectly, adding the perfect level of zingy heat to the delicious meat.

With so many new additions, flavour combinations and options it’s hard to pick an out and out favourite but suffice to say you could dine here for weeks and still not discover the full range of ingredients.

The small plates approach is an inspired move. You can try a little bit of what you fancy, enjoy a few nibbles with a tipple or go all out for a full global tapas style feast. The options are endless.

‘We hope guests enjoy tasting the new menu as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together, ‘said Ben. ‘We’ve always looked to bring guests something new and exciting, but this menu goes beyond this. We are in a fortunate position with Great Britain flying the flag for taking inspiration from all corners of the globe, our new menu allows us to utilise some of the best ingredients we have available to us and gives guests the freedom to pick and choose from all over the world and we can’t wait to go live and see what everyone thinks’

Our Verdict

The new Barlounge menu has now launched and we were lucky enough to go and try it out on Friday. We agree it is a really bold new offering – and in short, we absolutely loved it! Mark Jarvis and I shared a selection of small plates including the Roast Carrot Houmous and the Barrata Nduja. These were both absolutely delicious and I will definitely order them again, but the Barrata just had the edge for me due to the heat of the Calbrian sausage mixed with that gorgeous creamy and cool Burrata mozzarella, which I don’t think I’ve ever tried before.

We also went for the Smoky Black Pig Gyoza, the Duck Jam Donut and the Chorizo & Parmesan Croquette. My favourite here was the Gyoza, really moreish – but the Duck Jam Donut is a great experience all on its own!

But everyone has to try the Bang Bang Cauliflower with toasted almonds, fresh chilli, scallions & coriander … WOW! Its delicious!

Cannot wait to come back and have a go at the Large Plates! The flavours really are great, and of course the Barlounge service and ambience is as fabulous as it always has been.
